Vielfalter: Why Children Benefit from Outdoor Learning Environments

At the start of autumn, the Vielfalter Schule program introduced children to nature exploration through guided outdoor learning experiences. We are proud to support this initiative, because we believe that environmental stewardship begins in childhood.

Why Outdoor Learning Matters

Research consistently shows that children who spend time in natural environments develop stronger intellectual, emotional, social, and physical skills. Outdoor settings provide challenges that encourage children to understand their own capabilities in ways that indoor environments cannot replicate.

Five Benefits of Learning Outside

  • Holistic development — Natural settings support intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth simultaneously.
  • Creativity and cooperation — Unstructured natural environments encourage creative play and cooperative problem-solving.
  • Physical activity — Children in natural environments are more active and demonstrate improved behavior toward one another.
  • Eye health — Regular outdoor time correlates with reduced rates of nearsightedness in young people.
  • Stress reduction — Access to green spaces and natural play areas significantly reduces stress and anxiety in children.

Building Tomorrow's Environmental Stewards

Outdoor experiences create a lifelong connection to the natural world. For children to become responsible environmental stewards as adults, they must first develop a deep love for nature through direct experience and exploration.
